Iliana Iotova Met with Leaders of Major Jewish Organisations in the US
Iotova highlighted the historic tradition of tolerance within Bulgarian society. Representatives of the Jewish organisations expressed their gratitude for the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during the Second World War
President Iliana Iotova met in New York with the leaders of major American Jewish organisations as part of her visit to take part in the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Iotova highlighted the historic tradition of tolerance within Bulgarian society. Representatives of the Jewish organisations expressed their gratitude for the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during the Second World War.
Attention was also drawn to the idea of establishing a Museum of Tolerance in Bulgaria. This museum will not be focused solely on the past, but also on the future. We want to tell the story of the dark times of the Holocaust so that they are not repeated in the future, she said, adding that this is particularly important against the backdrop of global manifestations of anti-Semitism and attempts to rewrite history. It is precisely as a means of countering this that the President highlighted the development of critical thinking in the digital age, when children have access to all kinds of information. In this regard, the role of education is of paramount importance.
