Head of State Iliana Iotova and the Vice President of the People’s Republic of China, Han Zheng, discussed the prospects for Bulgarian-Chinese cooperation. The two met in New York during the Bulgarian President’s visit to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

 

During the talks, the two highlighted the upward trend in the development of bilateral relations following the joint declaration signed in 2019 by Presidents Rumen Radev and Xi Jinping to elevate relations to the level of a strategic partnership. The Bulgarian President and the Chinese Vice President noted the intensive political dialogue between the two countries.

 

Agriculture is one of the key areas of cooperation. Iotova emphasised the need for easier access to the Chinese market for Bulgarian agricultural products, which are environmentally friendly.

 

The Bulgarian President and the Chinese Vice President once again called for the launch of a direct flight route between Sofia and Beijing, which will facilitate business contacts between the two countries and boost tourism.

 

The interlocutors highlighted the good cooperation in the fields of education and culture. Han Zheng thanked Iliana Iotova for her support for the initiative to showcase the Bulgarian Thracian treasure in Beijing in 2029, marking the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and China.

 

The Chinese Vice President conveyed greetings from President Xi Jinping to the Head of State. Han Zheng emphasised that the Chinese government deeply appreciates Iliana Iotova’s participation in Beijing last year at a major high-level international forum on women. He noted her long-standing commitment to the protection of women’s rights.
