The Commission on Naming Sites of National Importance and Settlements

The Commission on Naming Sites of National Importance and Settlements is an auxiliary body that advises the President of the Republic of Bulgaria in the exercise of his powers under Art. 98, section 13 of the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria. The Commission on Naming Sites of National Importance and Settlements is appointed by Decree of the President of the Republic.

The Commission must prepare a summary of work on naming sites of national importance and settlements and must provide written annual reports on its activities to be posted on the website of the President of the Republic. In carrying out its activities, the Commission on Naming Sites of National Importance and Settlements must apply the following principles:
 
1. Do not name objects of national significance and places after living people.
2. Name objects of national importance and settlements after people with an essential and undeniable presence in Bulgarian history.
3. Do not give places names that have nothing to do with Bulgarian history and culture.
4. Avoid names that could potentially cause conflict internationally in terms of diplomacy and international law.
5. Respect the Bulgarian tradition in the giving of names.
