STEFAN YANEV

 

He was born on 1 March 1960 in the village of Popovitsa, Plovdiv district.

He has been Director of the Defense Policy and Security and Defense Policy Directorates at the Defense Ministry. He was also defense attaché in the Bulgarian Embassy in Washington DC, USA.  

Among the positions he held after 2003 are Head of the Defense Policy and Analyses Department at the Defense Policy Directorate of the Defense Ministry and Head of the Transformations Department at the NATO Center of Excellence Defense Against Terrorism, Ankara, Turkey.

In the period 1998 – 2000 he worked as an analyst at the Planning and Programming Section at the Partnership for Peace (PIP) Partnership Coordination Cell (PCC) in Mons, Belgium, after which he was appointed Senior Assistant Branch Head of the Strategies and Doctrines Branch at the Defense and Armed Forces Planning Department.  

In 1996 he was Expert at the International Cooperation Directorate at the Defense Ministry.

He graduated the “Georgi Dimitrov”  National Military Artillery School in Shumen in 1983. He continued his education at the G. Rakovski National Military Academy in Sofia and at the National War College of the National Defense University in Washington, DC, USA.

He is fluent in English, German and Russian. He is married and has two children.

He was appointed as Security and Defense Secretary of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria by virtue of decree No. 123 as of 9 May 2017.
