Statement by President Rosen Plevneliev on the terrorist attack against Israeli tourists at Burgas Airport

I am shocked and appalled by what happened at the airport in Sarafovo. I condemn all forms and terrorism and violence, which are incomprehensible and completely unacceptable to us. Bulgaria is a country where for centuries many ethnicities and religions have co-existed peacefully and in which tolerance is a fundamental value of society. This makes our shock at what happened even greater and our determination to prevent similar incidents in the future even firmer.

I express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims and I share their pain. This is a test for Israel and for the Bulgarian people, who have a very close, I would say, brotherly relationship. Bulgaria and the Bulgarian authorities will do everything in their power to punish the perpetrators of this cruel act of terrorism. I believe that the necessary organisation has been established and the experts are doing everything possible to ensure the security of Bulgarian and foreign citizens in the country. It is essential, no matter the efforts and resources it takes, that as soon as possible the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.
