President: Nuclear Energy Gives and Delivers Sovereignty, Autonomy and Security

We can achieve our climate goals only by facing the reality and implementing feasible solutions for our future, Rumen Radev stressed during the presentation of the Declaration on tripling the share of nuclear energy

Nuclear energy gives and delivers sovereignty, autonomy and security for every country, President Rumen Radev said during the official presentation of the Declaration on Tripling the Share of Nuclear Energy by 2050. The top-level event was held on the sidelines of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Head of State Rumen Radev led the Bulgarian delegation at the global forum.

The 22-nation document underlines the important role of nuclear energy in achieving carbon neutrality and sets the ambition of tripling nuclear capacity globally between 2020 and 2050 to limit the rise in the Earth's average surface temperature to 1.5°C. In addition to Bulgaria, countries supporting the declaration include Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Ghana, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Morocco, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, and United Arab Emirates. Among the participants were Presidents Emmanuel Macron of France, Andrzej Duda of Poland, and Klaus Iohannis of Romania, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of Sweden, US Special Envoy for Climate Action John Kerry and others.

The Bulgarian President noted the need to decarbonise the economy, which, however, requires significant investment in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind installations, whose capacity is limited. The capacity growth of this type of renewable energy sources is limited by a number of factors: weather, the lack of affordable and available enough technical solutions for storing energy and financial restrictions, the Head of State pointed out.

President Radev stressed that Bulgaria is strong supporter of this this common initiative as it unites the efforts in opposing the prejudices toward nuclear energy. The Head of State highlighted the experience of our country, where nuclear reactors have been operating safely and efficiently for five decades. I can understand the concern of some governments. However, as a President of a country with a successful record of accomplishment, I can firmly say that nuclear energy is safe and there is no place for fear and concerns, the Head of State added.

We can achieve our climate goals only by facing the reality, and implementing feasible, wise and cheap solutions for our future, Rumen Radev further stressed and called for united efforts in this direction.
